Abstract: The report of the World Health Organization (2013:22) states that wearing a seat-belt reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 40–50% for drivers and front seat occupants, and between 25–75% for rear seat occupants. Seat belts when used properly are one of the most effective means of passive occupant protection. However, the awareness of the importance and effectiveness of seat belts exists only in developed countries where seat belts are used in 95% of cases. The percentage of use of seat belts is used as an indicator of the performance of road safety, which gives a more complete picture of the level of safety on the roads, and that points at the existence of unsafe working conditions in traffic. Considering the importance of the use of seat belts for passengers safety, as well as the importance of measuring safety performance indicator, a survey and field research on the use of seat belts were conducted in the local community Lazarevac. Field research was conducted at two locations, on the rural and urban roads, according to the SafetyNet methodology (Hakkert et al, 2007:54-74). The aim of the field study was to examine the behavior, while the aim of the survey research was to examine the behavior and attitudes of drivers and passengers on the use of seat belts. In addition, the goal of the survey was to examine whether there is a relationship between gender, age, education, smoking status with frequency of use of seat belts.
