Abstract: Traffic safety of young road users, aged 15 – 30, is an important issue in Serbia. Statistical data shows that over 100 young lives are lost in traffic accidents every year. There has been a decrease in fatalities in recent years, but efforts to improve traffic safety of young road users must be continued in order to keep this trend. The best way to achieve this goal is to improve behavior of youths in traffic and give them knowledge how to stay safe. School traffic safety project is being coordinated by two teachers and conducted by a group of students of Technical School ̎GSP̎. Students are selected every year in order to form a team of peer educators. This team organizes a series of age group discussions and lectures on relevant traffic safety topics. Audiences, as well as participants in these discussions are senior students and the education process is designed to encourage them to behave safely as drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Recently, a team of students of Faculty of Transport and Traffic Engineering have joined the process of education. Senior students are divided in two groups, one half is educated by students, and the other by peer educators. Methods and approaches are different and we are interested in seeing which will perform better. Evaluation is conducted after each discussion and lecture so that effectiveness of each team can be measured. It is presumed that peer education method is less effective then classical lectures preformed by skilled lecturers.

Keywords: peer education, standard lecture, improvement of traffic safety of young road users, comparative analysis of methods
