Abstract:
Sleep is a natural, periodically and physiologically reversible state of reduced alertness, characterized by reduced perception and response to external anxiety. It is accompanied by complex behavioral (snoring, mumbling, turning in bed, etc.) and biological processes (changes in heart rate, breathing, hormones secretion, etc.). It can also be defined as an unconscious state from which a person can wake up with sensory or other stimuli. Sleep disorder can cause emotional changes, memory difficulties, poor motor skills, and therefore affect driving.
Daytime sleepiness is difficult and potentially dangerous symptom that is often unrecognized. It is caused by a disorder of quality or quantity of sleep. Excessive daytime sleepiness is a significant problem with a prevalence of 18%.
The aim of this paper is to show the effect of excessive daily sleepiness on traffic safety, with a special emphasis on professional drivers.
