Rezime:

Abstract:
According to the World Health Organization, each year almost 40,000 people die in traffic due to the use of psychoactive substances, while the number of injured is considerably higher. In Serbia, there are no data available indicating the magnitude of use of psychoactive substances, primarily medications, and their impact on road traffic safety.
The aim of the paper is to present the use of medications affecting psychophysical abilities (anxiolytics, antidepressants, analgesics, etc.) in Serbia and proposal of local community activities related to use of medicines and safe driving.
Results obtained by analyzing the data of the Serbian Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices on drug turnover and consumption in period 2006-2015. have shown that in Serbia, during 10 years, there has been an increased use of medicines containing psychoactive substances (share in total drug costs increased from 11.4 to 12.4%). The number of used benzodiazepine boxes, the most common from this group of drugs, increased by 12.6%, as well as their average daily consumption - from 91.75 (2006) to 107.78DDD/1000 inhabitants (2015).
Considering the insufficient population awareness and the inadequate definition of existing legislation in the field of drug impact on road traffic safety, local community representatives must take appropriate actions in order to inform experts and the general public about drugs that change psychophysical abilities while driving and the way of their functioning. These activities primarily include training of health services providers on how to inform patients about the potential adverse effects of prescribed drugs on their traffic safety.
